The strategy and the council
The proposed objects and principles of the Bill are intended to highlight that strengthening families and communities for the wellbeing and development of children and young people in South Australia is a shared responsibility. It would therefore be appropriate for the Bill to reflect a whole-of-state approach to this.
It is proposed that the Bill could include a requirement for the minister to develop a whole of state strategy for children and young people and their families.
The new Bill will propose that in preparing such a strategy, the minister will be required to consult with key stakeholders, including the Commissioner for Children and Young People and the Child Development Council consult with the community including children and young people on the draft strategy prior to adopting it and presenting it to both Houses of Parliament.
The strategy and council factsheet outlines:
- ideas for the matters to be addressed in a whole of state strategy for children and young people and their families
- the proposed role and functions of the Child Development Council.
As you review the information, consider how you might respond to the following questions:
- Are there any additional matters that you feel should be included in the proposed whole of state strategy for children and young people and their families?
- Being mindful of the rationale for placing the Child Development Council in this new Bill, are the functions that have been proposed supportive of the intentions of such a Bill? If not, how might they be strengthened?
